KAUNAS FORTRESS

1882-1915

The history of Kaunas Fortress. The history of a huge building, which was the most modern in the Russian empire of that time (the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century), is revealed in the authentic areas of the Ninth Fort. In the expositions in the barracks and one of defensive fortification parts (semi-caponier) of the Ninth Fort, visitors are introduced not only to the history of the Ninth Fort, but also to the construction of other objects of Kaunas Fortress, their modernization, and the projects which were not fulfilled. One can see the models of ordnance used in the fortress, touch their accurate reproductions, and see how the defenders of Kaunas Fortress (its garnison) looked like at the beginning of the 20th century. Visitors can walk along the underground galleries, joining the defensive fortifications of the Ninth Fort and feel what the defenders of the Fort felt when they heard a deafening sound of a shellburst.
WWI was the first modern and global military conflict in human history which involved more than 1.5 billion Earth residents and in which around 60 million people were mobilized to the army. In the exposition, most attention is paid to the military activities which took place in the territory of Lithuania: unique photos of that time are exhibited, as well as authentic objects of Russian and German army accoutrements and household items, awards, armament, and the collection of artillery shells. In the cannon shelter, visitors can get acquainted with the ordnances of WWI and WWII and the traces of these wars in Lithuania, i.e. authentic objects dated back to the war events collected during expeditions.
