EXCURSION (EXPOSITION OF OCCUPATIONS – THE NINTH FORT – THE UNDERGROUND)

The Ninth Fort Museum in Kaunas is composed of two main parts, i.e. the Ninth Fort and the Exposition of Occupations.
• The excursion starts in the Exposition of Occupations where visitors are introduced to the crimes committed during Soviet and Nazi occupations in Lithuania.
• The excursion continues in the Ninth Fort (another building) where visitors are introduced to the history of the Ninth Fort, authentic places, and the expositions which represent different periods.
• The defensive wall of the Ninth Fort (in the underground) is visited.

THE HISTORY OF THE NINTH FORT (THE NINTH FORT)
Guided tour (1 h 30 min, 15 Eur + entrance tickets)
During the excursion, visitors are introduced to different historical periods of the Ninth Fort:
• In the new exposition in the defensive fortification part of the Ninth Fort, the history of Kaunas Fortress is presented. Visitors are introduced to the construction of the Ninth Fort, armament, other forts of Kaunas Fortress, and German and Russian armies during WWI.
• The cells, punishment cells, and the meeting room of the division of Kaunas Hard Labour Prison are visited.
• The expositions about Nazi occupation in Lithuania are presented: mass murder in the Ninth Fort and Lithuania, prisoners’ escape from the Ninth Fort, Kaunas Ghetto and the destinies of its residents, and the saviours of Jews.

KAUNAS FORTRESS IN 1979-1918 (THE NINTH FORT)
Thematic excursion (1 h, 10 Eur + entrance tickets)
During the excursion, visitors are introduced to the history of Kaunas Fortress: a new exposition is presented on the prehistory, construction, modernization, armament, and garrison in the defensive fortification (semi-caponier) of the Ninth Fort. In the restored casemates of the Ninth Fort, accurate models of ordnance are presented. In the barracks, visitors are presented with the armament, elements of accoutrement, and household items of the Russian and German armies, which fought in WWI.
It is recommended to book an excursion to the defensive wall of the Ninth Fort (the underground) additionally.

THE DEFENSIVE WALL OF THE NINTH FORT (THE UNDERGROUND)
Thematic excursion (45 min, 10 Eur + entrance tickets)
The visitors of the excursion are introduced to the structure of defensive fortifications of the Ninth Fort: underground galleries used for reaching different parts of the Fort are visited; the positions of former ordnance, garrison, and artillery armament are presented. One can see the well of drinking water used by the garrison of the Ninth Fort, ammunition depots, and ordnance and garrison shelters.

THE NINTH FORT AS A DIVISION OF KAUNAS HARD LABOUR PRISON (THE NINTH FORT)
Thematic excursion (45 min, 10 Eur + entrance tickets)
During the excursion, visitors are introduced to the division of Kaunas hard labour prison, which operated in the Ninth Fort during the Interwar period: the changes in the Ninth Fort are presented which were necessary in reconstructing the defensive fortifications to a prison; a meeting room of prisoners is visited, as well as the yards, cells, and punishment cells of the former prison; life and work conditions of the prisoners are presented.

HOLOCAUST IN LITHUANIA (THE NINTH FORT)
Thematic excursion (1 h, 10 Eur + entrance tickets)
During the excursion, visitors are introduced to the destruction of the Jewish nation by Germany during WWII: the expositions about mass murders in the Ninth Fort and in Lithuania in 1941-1944, the history of Kaunas Ghetto and the destinies of its residents, and the Lithuanian saviours of Jews are presented. Mass destruction of foreign Jewish citizens, foreign diplomats who saved Jews during WWII, the destruction of the remains of the people killed by Nazis, and the legendary escape of prisoners (burners of corpses) from the Ninth Fort are focused on. The field of mass murders and the memorial are visited.

OCCUPIED LITHUANIA IN 1940-1990 (EXPOSITION OF OCCUPATIONS)
Thematic excursion (45 min, 10 Eur + entrance tickets)
The excursion in the Exposition of Occupations introduces visitors to the crimes committed during Soviet and Nazi occupations in Lithuania. Stained glass picture “Nenugalėtoji Lietuva” (“Undefeated Lithuania”) created by artist Morkūnas is visited; the repressions during the first and the second occupation of Lithuania, the destruction of the Lithuanian statehood, life of Lithuanians in exile, and the sacrifice of Romas Kalanta are discussed. The repressions of peaceful Lithuanian residents during the Nazi occupation are focused on, as well as imprisonment of Lithuanians in concentration camps. The exposition which introduces visitors to the reestablishment of the Lithuanian independence is presented.
