KAUNAS HARD LABOUR PRISON

1924-1940

During the interwar period, a division of Kaunas Hard Labour Prison was established in the Ninth Fort in 1924 for criminal and political prisoners. These days, visitors have a possibility to feel the spirit of that period, visiting a reconstructed prisoners’ cell, and get introduced to the life conditions of prisoners; to find out about the crimes for which the prisoners would get to the punishment cells called “Concrete Sack,” “The Wet,” or “Resort” and to “try them out;” to see how the prisoners could communicate with their relatives in the meeting room. The exposition in the authentic areas of the Ninth Fort prison tells about prisoners’ everyday life and introduces to the prisoners who played a more important role in the Lithuanian history.
