NAZI OCCUPATION AND HOLOCAUST

1941-1944

In 1941, Nazi occupation changed the Soviet occupation in Lithuania. The Ninth Fort was transformed into a place of mass murder, especially of Jewish people. In the expositions of this time, one can discover the conditions of imprisonment in a reconstructed cell, see the last inscriptions before death, remaining on the walls of the fort, and get introduced to the tragic destinies of famous Lithuanian public actors, whose life finished in the Ninth Fort. Also, the exposition presents the details of the legendary escape of 64 prisoners from the Ninth Fort.
Other topics of the Nazi period are also presented: first steps of Nazis in Lithuania and the beginning of mass murder, life in Kaunas Ghetto and the destinies of its people, and the imprisonment of Lithuanians in Stutthof. Attention is also paid to the diplomats who saved the Jews and especially to the famous Japanese Consul to Lithuania Chiune Sugihara.
