It is like a journey through time, covering decades full of events: from Kaunas Fortress to the Nazi occupation of Lithuania.First of all, the history of Kaunas Fortress is presented in the semi-caponier of the Ninth Fort and the construction of the Ninth Fort, the armaments, the other forts of Kaunas Fortress and the armies of the German and the Russian Empires during the First World War are discussed. After getting acquainted with the exhibitions on Kaunas Fortress, the unique element of the Ninth Fort, the defensive wall (underground communication galleries), is visited. The entire structure of the defensive fortification can be seen from the roof of the barracks.Later, the meeting room, prisoners’ cells and punishment cells of the division of Kaunas Hard Labour Prison, which operated in the Ninth Fort during the interwar period, are visited.The tour continues with the NKVD transit prison, which operated in the Ninth Fort during the first Soviet occupation. Extended thematic guided tour THE DEFENSIVE WALL OF THE NINTH FORT: THE UNDERGROUND (ON WEEKENDS)

11 EUR per person (6 EUR with a  discount)*  Participants of the guided tour are briefly introduced to the history of Kaunas Fortress: in the semi-caponier of the Ninth Fort, the circumstances of the origin of Kaunas Fortress are presented as well as the construction of the Ninth Fort. The second part of the tour includes a visit to the underground communication galleries of Kaunas Ninth Fort. The former positions of the artillery guns and garrison and the artillery armament are introduced to. The participants of the tour can see the drinking water well used by the Ninth Fort garrison, the ammunition stores and the shelters of artillery guns and the garrison. * Entrance ticket is included in the price

 20 € per group + entrance ticketsThe tragic events of the Holocaust are vividly remembered in the Ninth Fort, which during the Second World War became one of the largest mass murder sites in Nazi Germany’s occupied Lithuania. The participants of the tour get acquainted with the exhibitions on the mass murder that took place in 1941-1944 in the Ninth Fort and elsewhere in Lithuania, the history of Kaunas Ghetto and the fate of its inhabitants, the Lithuanian rescuers of the Jews, the foreign diplomats who saved the Jews during the Second World War, the extermination of the foreign Jews in the Ninth Fort and the legendary escape of the prisoners (burners of the corpses) from the Ninth Fort. The tour finishes with a visit to the mass murder field and the memorial monument.

Participants learn about the reconstruction of the Ninth Fort in order to adapt the defensive fortifications to the needs of the prison, visit the prisoners’ meeting room, the courtyards of the former prison, the cells and the barracks and get acquainted with the life and work conditions of the prisoners who were imprisoned in the Ninth Fort.

 20 € per group + entrance ticketsBehind the massive metal squeaky doors, there are mysterious-looking underground communication galleries. Access is only possible with a guide. He reveals the most enigmatic details of the Ninth Fort’s fortifications: artillery weapons, former artillery gun and garrison positions, their hiding places, drinking water well and ammunition warehouses. FROM TUESDAY TO FRIDAY (Pre-booked guided tours) Individual visitors, families or groups visiting the museum from Tuesday to Friday and wishing to learn more about the topics that it represents are invited to book guided or thematic tours in advance. The guided tours are conducted on working days (from Tuesdays to Fridays) in Lithuanian, English and Russian.* One has to pre-book the guided tours in advance by email muziejus@9fortomuziejus.lt or by phone +370 686 26243. The maximum number of participants in one group is 25 people. Thematic guided tour KAUNAS FORTRESS IN 1879-1940

 20 € per group + entrance tickets Why and how was the Ninth Fort of Kaunas Fortress built? What made it different from the others? Who were its defenders and what military equipment were they equipped with? The answers to these and many other interesting questions related to Kaunas Fortress will be revealed to the participants of the tour.During the tour, the exhibition in the Ninth Fort’s defensive fortification (semi-caponier) will give an insight into the prehistory of Kaunas Fortress, its construction, modernisation, weaponry and garrison. Later, a visit is made to the defensive wall (underground communication galleries), where the positions of the artillery guns and garrison are examined. The tour continues by climbing up to the former barracks building, where the entire structure of the defensive fortification is presented. Returning to the exhibition space, visitors learn about the modernisation of the fortress buildings and the history of the capture of Kaunas Fortress.
