This tour is a great opportunity for those who are in a hurry, but would like to get to know the history of the Ninth Fort. In just over one hour, participants will learn about the different periods of the history of the Ninth Fort.
First of all, the history of Kaunas Fortress is presented in the semi-caponier of the Ninth Fort and the reasons for its establishment and its uniqueness from other objects of Kaunas Fortress are explained. In the defence wall (the central poterne), visitors are introduced to the weaponry of Kaunas Fortress, as well as the former cannon and gunpowder storage rooms.
The tour continues in the meeting room, cells and the punishment room of the prisoners of Kaunas hard labour prison, which operated in the Ninth Fort during the interwar period. The exhibition dedicated to the NKVD transit prison in the Ninth Fort during the first Soviet occupation (1940-1941) is visited.
Later, visitors visit the exhibitions reflecting the history of the Ninth Fort during the Nazi occupation (1941-1944): they find out about the detention conditions of condemned prisoners, the escape of prisoners from the Ninth Fort and the extermination of Kaunas Ghetto prisoners. The tour ends at the memorial plaque “The Path of Death”, which gives a brief introduction to the mass murder site and the monument to the victims of Nazism.
