Kaunas Ninth Fort Museum is today one of the largest monumental sites in Europe. This unique 50-hectare site is a memorial complex comprising a World War II mass murder site and a burial ground, as well as a memorial to Nazism victims.
The museum presents Lithuania’s traumatic experiences of the mid-20th century in an authentic space that allows visitors to engage with, learn about and better understand the significance of this important historical period. It is a place of serenity that goes beyond the passive presentation of cultural assets and aims to educate society and promote historical awareness through a variety of cultural activities.
The Museum is constantly striving to meet the expectations and needs of all visitors: not only does it open exhibitions and displays, research and produce publications, offer guided tours and educational programmes, but it also invites to events and various initiatives, which offer both traditional and non-traditional ways of understanding complex historical events. The Museum’s professional team is always striving to provide every visitor with an experience that meets their expectations. The infrastructure is constantly being developed to provide the highest level of services to meet visitors’ needs and develop even further.
Today, Kaunas Ninth Fort Museum is an important cultural institution, actively developing international relations and cooperating with other museums, educational and scientific institutions as well as state institutions and research centres around the world. All this helps to fully foster historical memory and promote international dialogue about past events and their impact on today’s society.
Kaunas Ninth Fort Museum is a place where every visitor will have the opportunity to explore, learn, understand and, most importantly, directly touch history. We invite you not only to visit, but also to create the museum together. Everyone’s contribution will help us shape a cultural space that is open to all and inclusive, contributing to a better understanding of our history and civic awareness.
