International Discussion: Holocaust and Historical Memory

Online event

2021 November 25 d. 11:15

On November 25, 2021 at 11:15 a.m. (Eastern European Time (EET), UTC +2) an international discussion about the importance of the Holocaust remembrance will be broadcasted live on Kaunas Ninth Fort Museum’s Facebook page. Representatives of the delegations from foreign countries (Germany, Austria, Poland), embassies, diplomats, historians and the members of Kaunas Jewish community will participate in the discussion.

In 2021, the 80th anniversary of the Holocaust in Lithuania is commemorated. The tragic events are well remembered by Kaunas Ninth Fort, which during the World War II was converted into one of the largest places of mass murder in Nazi occupied Lithuania.

Between 1941 and 1944, Jews from Lithuania and other European countries (Austria, Czechoslovakia, Poland, France, the Soviet Union, Germany) were killed at the Ninth Fort. On November 25th, 2934 Jews from Berlin, Munich and Frankfurt am Main were shot to death in a mass murder field near the Ninth Fort. Another action to kill foreign Jews took place on November 28th. Then, 2,000 Jews from Vienna and Breslau (now – Wroclaw) were killed.

On November 25th, 2021 the representatives of the sites from which the victims of the Holocaust were brought – Berlin, Munich, Vienna and Wroclaw – will visit Kaunas Ninth Fort Museum and honour the memory of the Holocaust victims. The representatives will also meet the members of Kaunas Jewish community, foreign embassies in Lithuania, diplomats and join the discussion about the importance of the Holocaust remembrance. The discussion will be held in English. Moderator – historian Dr. Linas Venclauskas.
